I used to work at the Petro Canada refinery on Southdown Rd which used to be a Gulf refinery. PC bought the place for the Hydro-treated engine oil patent. After de-waxing the base stock was as clear as drug store baby oil . As for all engine oil being the "same" even when it met the same specs. Tanker loads of oil went to the GM, Ford , Chrysler, Toyota & Honda assembly plants plus thief own house brand oil and Canadian Tire etc brands. The lab techs were very loud and clear that the oils were not the same. Each was an unique blend of additives. They had had tried on occasion to sneak a load of surplus GM oil for Toyota. Toyota's lab caught it and there was much screaming.
