Super A , magneto timing

Is there a proper way of timing the gears in the distributor body, or should I just get #1 TDC and when the impulse coupling clicks, just align the gears so the rotor is at #1? (I know, I should have marked them first)

The small gear has one tooth that looks to have a little machined off. Is this used to time them or is the tip of this tooth just broken?

When I put these back, should the housing be filled with axle grease or?
