If the timing gears are all properly set and you follow the manual's timing procedure correctly, everything will work fine. From your description, it looks like you got in trouble with "turned crank until the impulse deal tripped," which the manual didn't tell you to do. That was probably 1/2 turn, at which point you needed to go another 1/2 turn, not a full one. You have to go a full number of turns (in total) or you won't have the timing mark back in line. Following the manual, you will actually be at cylinder 4 when you set the timing.
