clacking sound / burned glow plugs

After rebuild have a loud clacking sound in #1 when at operating temp. No sound when first started and cold. Clacking occurs at 1400 rpm an up. Nothing at idle. Have swapped the injector, but made no difference. Piston is not hitting any thing that I have checked, and no marks on the piston. Any-one had this sound before, and what is the cause?
Is there suppose to be a resistor before the glow plug indicator ,as the glow plugs are being burnt off in a short time?
