Can I shift gears on the fly on my 1946 Farmall A?

Hey guys, I'm a rookie here...Weekend farmer from the New York suburbs...My first tractor...Etc...
Not sure if my A can be shifted like your everyday car, or do I stop and pick the gear I think I would need. Reason I ask is because my A does not seem to enjoy me shifting to another gear while underway. Not sure if I need repairs or if they can't be shifted like a car.
