Theoretically they can be shifted on the fly. But it is hard to do with a hand throttle because one hand is shifting and the other is steering. It is all about matching engine rpm to road speed for whatever gear you will be selecting. Synchonizers are not necessary. Ask a truck driver. Roadranger transmissions have no snychos and an experienced driver only uses the clutch when starting from a standing stop or to momentarily uncouple the motor on a down shift while at full throttle. It is not even necessary to double-clutch. Double-clutching was helpful on non-syncho trannies with only 4 gears such as my 47 KB-5. Having said all that, I broke 2nd gear in my 47 Cub when I was eight years old by trying to shift it like a car.
