Did early SM's have standard M trans gears?

I have a 53 SM (24XXX) the reanend casting number is 3570236R1. It does not have live hydraulics.

I've been told SM's, even thought they started in 52, did not get the faster 2-4 gear ratios until the live hydraulic change in mid-53.

I've measured my rear casting to the M's (6002 D through DD) and can't find any diffenence, even though Guy Fay's Letter Seris book says the casting was made taller. Can someone please offer some info? Thanks!
