When they say the ignition is separate from the rest of the electrical system, you need to recognize that the wire from the magneto is used to kill the tractor. When you turn the switch off, the switch grounds that wire. When you turn the switch on, the switch "un-grounds" that wire. It never has external electrical power to it. Lots of old magneto tractors have no wire running from the magneto. They work just fine, but you have to slow them down and us ethe choke to kill the engine. Converting to negative ground helps prevent an accident should anyone attemp to jump start the tractor, or use it to jump start another vehicle without identifying that it is a positive ground.
