Check your battery cables with an ohm meter. Does the ground cable have two small cables? Check each one. Had this same problem on a 317. These engines are rubber mounted so they use a split ground cable, one to the chassis and one to the motor. On mine the ground wire to the motor was bad. Had the starter off a couple times and hooked it to a battery charger. It would jump out of your hands it spun so fast. Put it back on and wouldn't spin fast enough to kick the bendix gear into the ring gear.
