I have a John Deere 318 that many days i cannot get it to engage the starter. All it does is "click" and will not turn the enging over. I had the starter rebuilt and replaced the relay a couple of times now. I have also replaced the battery with a new one. It seems if I put a heavy charge into the battery sometimes it will engage. My next move is to replace the starter with a new one and see if that works. I dont know if there are any relay switches on the system or not but even then i would think they would not let the starter to "ding" the flywheel. I love the tractor and doing everything to keep it in a running condition. But I am at a loss as to why this starting problem is annoying me. Help anyone?

Check your battery cables with an ohm meter. Does the ground cable have two small cables? Check each one. Had this same problem on a 317. These engines are rubber mounted so they use a split ground cable, one to the chassis and one to the motor. On mine the ground wire to the motor was bad. Had the starter off a couple times and hooked it to a battery charger. It would jump out of your hands it spun so fast. Put it back on and wouldn't spin fast enough to kick the bendix gear into the ring gear.

JD had a problem with those and worse when older. I had to install a relay kit and then mine was fine. Same kit fits many machines.
Hopefully your dealer can find the part #.
It may be in the archives here or at the garden tractor forum.

Rotten connections under the insulation or in the crimps? Low voltage ?
Unless you use a voltmeter you will be playing eny-meany changing parts until randomly stumbling across the culprit(s).

do you have the starter solinoid under the battery, or on the starter itself? If it is on the starter itself, a starter relay booster kit will help. Availible from your deere dealer.
