John, The three speed came out in 1958 and you could get a Wheel Horse model with out fenders from 1958 to 1961, to differentiate take a look at the front axle to see if it is a piece of bar stock or a cast iron part. The bar stock front axle was used on the RJ-58 and RJ-59 along with the three speed and the cast iron front axle was used on 1960 Suburban series model 400 and the 1961 model 401. A RJ-58 and RJ-59 are exactly alike with the serial number being the only difference. A 400 will have a lever type throttle and choke control where as a 401 will use push/pull knobs.
