John, If you can post a good discription of the tractor including transmission type , engine horse power, tire size, hood discription, discription of the steering wheel and if recoil or electric start and we can ID the tractor year and model for you. Wheel Horse has not givin out too many serial numbers corresponding with year model figures.

4 hp kohler, rope start that sits below steering wheel, 3 speed trans, no fenders, metal seat, hood has wheel horse stamped in front and 2 decals on sides, i think rear tires are 6.00x16 bar tread, front tires have calcium in them.
i do not have any serial numbers off of ot yet. steering wheel has 3 metal spokes. mower deck is probably 24-30 inch and has a pedal to disengage belt.
trans has 1 brake connected to clutch pedal.the lever that controls height of mower deck is also connected to a cable that goes to rear hitch, that is a rectangle sleeve hitch with a pin in it.
hope this describes it to you,

john

John,
The three speed came out in 1958 and you could get a Wheel Horse model with out fenders from 1958 to 1961, to differentiate take a look at the front axle to see if it is a piece of bar stock or a cast iron part. The bar stock front axle was used on the RJ-58 and RJ-59 along with the three speed and the cast iron front axle was used on 1960 Suburban series model 400 and the 1961 model 401. A RJ-58 and RJ-59 are exactly alike with the serial number being the only difference. A 400 will have a lever type throttle and choke control where as a 401 will use push/pull knobs.

thanks for the info.
sounds like it is a 401, because it has a push/pull knob for the throttle. i am thinking front axle is cast iron.

thanks, john
