Trip loaders work pretty much as you guessed. They have hydraulic up/down but the bucket (generally smaller than a full hydraulic one) operates on a trip system. When the loader is down, the bucket runs level, fill the bucket, raise it over where you want the load dumped, then pull a lever, that releases a pin and the bucket dump free. Back up, let the loader down, the bucket will catch the dirt and swivel back untill it's level and the pin locks it again. All hydraulic ones use hydraulic cylinders for up/down AND for tipping the bucket. This give you an infinite position for the bucket through about 100 degrees of swing. Full hydraulic loaders tend to require newer tractors with better hydraulic systems. Trip buckets work fine for loading manure and the like but get limited pretty quickly doing other tasks.
