i did same thing to my '62 Ford 2000...changed it over to GM alternator...other than bulbs i didnt have a prob until about 10 years later when the fuel gauge went south...i'd bet your brakes will be ok but they do make a resistor to cut voltage back down to 6 volts on sensitive parts. still got the original 6 volt starter and solenoid on it too.
