you can check any generator by disconnecting the wires off the F ang G terminals, grounding the F terminal to the tractor frame. start the motor and have generator spinning. measure the voltage across the G and F terminals (F grounded) at an idle. the unregulated voltage will be the max output of the genertor, not the rated voltage of a battery. if it is 6 ovlt, it might put out 12-15 without a regulator and battery connected. if it is 12 it might put out 30 volts. if you only get 2-3 volts, generator is in poor condition.--- most if not all tractors prior to 1958 were 6 volt, and "most" were plsitive gorund. you can change polarity no problem, the starter does not care.
