Any engine starts out being timed to TDC on number one cylinder on the compression stroke without the engine running. When running you will find the F (fire) line with a timing light. All engines are not timed at 30 degrees advanced but yours is. There is a procedure where you time the engine using the fire line when using a magneto to set the magneto without loading the spring.
Some get confused between the two. They both come out the same if you understand which one you are using and what you are needing at the end. Starting with the TDC means you will have to check your spark on the compression stroke after assembly to make sure you are not 180 degrees off. In doing so you will know you are on target.
