Ralphwd45 01-06-2013 13:43:45 66.243.215.13 Report to Moderator	I removed the engine from my wd45, to replace the clutch and pressure plate. was ready to lower it back in, and buckle it up, when I decided to find the flywheel timimg marks, and paint them white with a paint pencil, so I can see them easier. I found two places with a mark with an F on them, and they are directly oppisite each other. 180 deg. I brought the number one piston up on compression stroke, to the top, by feel, and looked at my marks, to locate where in the bell housing, that the timing hole should be. No holes anywhere in my bell housing when viewed from outside, or inside. IT manual says view timing mark thru hole on lower bell housing.(BS) I looked at 3 small Allis's and the B, C, &CA, all had the hole in the bell on the left side . I gave up and am here on the forum asking for help, also I removed the govener with distributer attatched, so I will have to retime it. If the hole is in the inspection plate, on the bottom of the bell housing, how do you use it with the timing mark 30 deg higher up on the flywheel? [Reply]   [No Email]

There should be a line or notch front and center of inspection hole. Install magneto set to #1 cylinder. (remember to rotate the mag backwards to set it to #1 or else your timing will be off). Start tractor, once started, check with timing light, the Fire line should now be visible thru inspection hole. Adjust accordingly. This is the procedure for framed allis"s (WC,WD,WD45). All others are considered frameless and use the side inspection hole but basically timed the same.   [Reply]  [No Email]
anallisguy 01-06-2013 16:10:13 68.32.141.76 Report to Moderator	Re: fly wheel timing port? in reply to Ralphwd45, 01-06-2013 13:43:45   a couple of inches away from the fire marks you will find a tdc line, probably not marked. will be on the bottom when on tdc, and possibly not visible thru the opening in the bottom of the bell housing. the set screw that holds the crank pulley will be at the bottom of the crank rotation at 6 oclock when you are on tdc.   [Reply]  [No Email]

Normally you "time" the motor at TDC as they startup / fire at that point. After the motor is running, the spark will advance to 30 degrees with the magnito or distributor weights. Dick L 01-06-2013 15:18:28 50.51.132.156 Report to Moderator	Re: fly wheel timing port? in reply to steve(ill), 01-06-2013 14:27:30   Any engine starts out being timed to TDC on number one cylinder on the compression stroke without the engine running. When running you will find the F (fire) line with a timing light. All engines are not timed at 30 degrees advanced but yours is. There is a procedure where you time the engine using the fire line when using a magneto to set the magneto without loading the spring. Some get confused between the two. They both come out the same if you understand which one you are using and what you are needing at the end. Starting with the TDC means you will have to check your spark on the compression stroke after assembly to make sure you are not 180 degrees off.
