When I was a kid, I knew where Dad's guns were, and I knew where the ammo was. And I NEVER, EVER played with a gun without a parent present until I was about 14.
Dad took us squirrel hunting when we were about 6 or 7...so we understood the concept of DEAD long before we ever got to mess with firearms themselves. DEAD is permanent, as far as our medical science goes. It ain't TV, it ain't movies, it ain't video games...DEAD is as final as it gets in this life. And Dad took us hunting when he took his .22...so we understood at a young age that being dead from a .22 is JUST AS DEAD as a 12-gauge slug will leave you.
Kids need to understand TWO things first: 1) DEAD is FINAL; and 2)Guns can make living things DEAD. THEN the other gun safety rules can be taught.
