10 Year Old Killed From Pistol Shot.

This story came over the news just before Christmas. Today more details came out. The 10yold was playing with a 12yold at the elders home, unsupervised. They went to the fathers bedroom and dug out an unloaded pistol which was hidden in a dresser drawer, in a holster under cloths. The two kids played with it for a while, and went back to the dresser and found a loaded clip in another drawer. It's reported that they inserted and removed the clip several times before the gun discharged, killing the younger boy. The father has been arested for endangering a minor and his 12yold son is facing manslaughter charges, in juvinal court. I'm sure there will be much much more on this, as it evolves.

Truly a sad story, but also it does sound like a complete accident. Not so sure that arrests and juvenile manslaughter charges are the answer......

That was no accident, guns and ammunition should be locked up in separate places. Anything less is simply stupid and careless!

This was truly tragic, but arresting the child and parent, that is political correctness gone crazy. More children are killed in swimming pools than with handguns.

Agree with locking the guns up but also teaching the kids about guns. Oldest boy 9 joned shooting sports for 4H last year. I of course helped and we both learned a lot and had a great time. Since then we shoot more at home and the younger boys 5 and 7 join in and they know that they are dangerous and not toys.

You think a burglar/invader is going to stop and wait while you say, "Just a minute while I find my keys to load my gun." Lack of education was the only problem, in more than one household it seems...

...Where do u live ????
...There should be NO CRIMINAL CHARGES FILED.
...POLITICIAL CORRECTNESS IS ALIVE AND WELL THERE

Thats foolish kids should be taught to respect guns and never allowed to ever 'play' with a gun.
A locked up gun is useless.
Of course when a kid gets hurt or killed with a gun or on a tractor its a huge deal get killed and crippled all the time playing sports but then its no big deal.

The father probably feels horrible about it and then they arrest him. Twelve-year-old charged with manslaughter? Am I dreaming or is this real? Is there more to the story than we know?

Craig you hit it perfectly. I do the exact same thing. 3 boys in shooting sports and I am one of the instructors. I have learned just as much as them and have had probably more fun.

Sorry to hear the sad news. A tragedy for several families, I'm sure. I think the key word in your post though is "unsupervised". Both of those boys, at that age, should have already been taught enough about guns to know that they are off limits without adult supervision. I did a lot of things in my youth that I got strapped for, but I never touched my Dad's guns without his permission.

I have to agree with you, ever see some of the video games out there for kids? Guns, killing, ect? Ever watch certian music videos? or hear some of the music being put out there? yes it was a tragedy, that "could"/ "should" have been prevented, but its to late for that now. I heard it on the radio, and the father was upset. I havent heard more about it since then.

By the time I was 10 years old my Dad had taught me that "every gun is loaded". And Never point a gun at someone. And never let another kid point a gun at you. Plus another hundred safety rules.
If you have guns in the home, you MUST get them out and show them to the kids and discuss how they work and how dangerous they are, Take the mystery away. You can teach a 7 year old gun safety. This was a preventable accident. The Father should be charged with reckless endagerment.

When I was a kid, I knew where Dad's guns were, and I knew where the ammo was. And I NEVER, EVER played with a gun without a parent present until I was about 14.

Dad took us squirrel hunting when we were about 6 or 7...so we understood the concept of DEAD long before we ever got to mess with firearms themselves. DEAD is permanent, as far as our medical science goes. It ain't TV, it ain't movies, it ain't video games...DEAD is as final as it gets in this life. And Dad took us hunting when he took his .22...so we understood at a young age that being dead from a .22 is JUST AS DEAD as a 12-gauge slug will leave you.

Kids need to understand TWO things first: 1) DEAD is FINAL; and 2)Guns can make living things DEAD. THEN the other gun safety rules can be taught.

I agree it wasn't much of an accident. More of an accident waiting to happen. Of course with a gun it's often fatal if kids find it. I also wouldn't say the gun or the ammo were very hidden. It is very tragic but I think the dad could be in a lot of trouble. He was careless leaving the gun and ammo where the kids could find it. If he wasn't home, the gun shouldn't have been left where it was. I bet the kids didn't find it by accident and knew it was there for a while. Having the gun and trying to keep it secret from the kids is one of the worst things to do. Look what happened. The dad probably feels horrible and he should! It was his fault on several levels. Terrible Shame ,Dad built Mom a new house 1963 ,When i was 7 ,I picked up a pistol ,While , i was visiting the new neighbors same age son who bought our House that was built in 1840...it was simply left siitting on the cedar chest ,Robert handed it to me to show me how heavy it was .... and I honestly thought it was a TOY ,,.the kids Mom quickly snatched it Away ,, and scolded us never to touch anything like that again... NEVER KNEW .. it may have been loaded ,,

When and if someone ever breaks into your house, and is armed, I can guarantee you their gun and ammo will both be in the same place. If yours isn't just remember this. The criminal might know all the gun safety rules but I can guarantee you that he just won't care and will point his gun at you and pull the trigger without second thought.......

In this case both boys were old enough to know about and practice gun safety so there is NO excuse at all for this to happen.

I don't agree with we were shown/taught about guns and learned respect. Throws evrything about a kid out the window, that they'll never get in trouble their whole childhood. If they get in trouble it can be for disrespecting a gun as well as anything else.

Hmm. What pistol is this that becomes unsafe merely by inserting the magazine? There are guns such as the Browning Hi-Power that won't fire when the magazine is removed, but there still needs to be a round in the chamber. Either the pistol was stored with a chambered round or those boys figured out how to rack the slide.

Every cop in the nation should be arrested then.

The problem with today's youth is that they're taught and encouraged to DISrespect authority. By peers. By teachers. By television. By their own parents in many cases.

Back in the day, scolding worked. Adults put the fear of God into you. You were told "never touch that again," and you didn't.

Who needed to know about gun safety? If you never touched it, it couldn't hurt you or anyone else.

These days, if you scold a kid, all they do is wait until you're not looking. You can't watch them all the time.

Ah yes. It's all because of "today's youth". My dad used to tell about sneaking his dad's pistol out of the house and even taking it to school. This would have been in the early 1930's. So when did this moral corruption take place? I guess we've just been sliding downhill since 1929.

If you have a gun in your house, the one thing you can be sure of is any kids who stay with you WILL find it. Any accident is a chain of events. If your guns are under lock and key, kids MAY not get access to them. (I remember a friend of mine who regularly unlocked his dad's gun cabinet with the "hidden" key.) If your guns are unloaded and the ammunition is stored separately, kids MAY not load them. If your kids have been taught to respect firearms, they MAY not play with them. Even if you do all these things, a tragedy is still possible, just less likely.

That is one thing that seems to be missing in today's homestyles. Some parent's are "afraid" it will make their child mad if they disapline them. Others are not at home long enough to even know what all is going on with their children, they are out making money so they can find "happiness". (which they never seem to find by the way)
They would be much better off living in a smaller home, driving a less expensive vehicle, and raising the child or children that they brought in to this world.

I personaly think arresting the man and son are as dunb as many of the coments posted here.

I hire alot of kids, and when my kids were young, I gave them a place and time to tell me anything regardless of the content.

I will bet that ever parent on this board has had children do things mom and dad did not know about.

If you lock a gun, could the kids find the key?

Our school of thought has cahnged over the years, I sold the most rat poision in freshamnan FFA, and won a 22 rifle that I took home on the bus without a case. The bus driver did not ask if it was loaded etc.

I also took a 410 to school to refinish it with out a case, and rode the bus.

I have had two guns go off when they should not have--just lucky.

Anyone Remember doing something as a child you knew better than to do? Doing construction work, I have stumbled across a few things that mom and dad sure had no idea the kids were involved in.

Our school says no knives---no excuse.....I felt if my child was sent home for having a nail clippers with a small blade, or if I packed his lunch and left a butter knife in the brown bag, and he was expeled. Well then we needed to play real stupid, because he could stab with a pencil, he could break a window and kill with a broken piece of glass....and the list goes on.

We can not wrap our kids in a bubble, and when we think this way accidents will still happen.

When I was a child, I can not think of a family that did not have a gun in real easy acess of small children, and do not recal any accident.

I'm not a crazy one with a hundred guns, in fact I do not own a gun, and so far see no need for one. I don't pack heat ever, and I'm not so sure most of us need to. I do live in a very shelterd part of the world, and I'm OK with that.

There was an 8 year old killed here in Michigan the other day by an exploding split rim truck tire in a shop.

When truck tires are outlawed, only outlaws will have truck tires!!

Mark SAFETY is also a chain of events. We have guns in our home, we have ammo in our home, we have kids in our home.....but you 1st talk to your kids about it -AWARENESS. Show them what guns can do. I explain that they are a tool, alot like the tools we use in the shop, you can do allot with them but they can hurt you and others and can kill you and others if not used in a propper manner. I make sure that they are not a mystery of forbidden but can only be used in the right context with the right supervision. ALL our guns have trigger locks and are in a gun safe. If you have to unlock twice it brings more awareness and seriousness to the situation. ALL ammo is in a dirrerant location. MORE AWARENESS. When we shoot guns TOGETHER we have a box with all the safety equipment in it. If you use safety equipment it brings MORE AWARENESS. Finally EVERY time we get the guns out we talk, talk, talk about them and what they do. Failure to do this makes ME as a parent NEGLAGENT. -just like this kids father.

That is why gun safes were invented.

And always make sure that the only key(s) are in your possession at all times. Or lock up the guns and ammo separate. My 9 year old has been told to treat all guns as they are loaded and never point a gun at someone, unless a bad guy is breaking in.

The NRA has statistics showing that since 1906 firearms related deaths have dropped massively, Involving children.
