Sounds like Taiwan. I was in a Marine jet fighter squadron on a Nationalist Chinese Air Force Base by PingTung from August, 1958 to April, 1959.
Red China began saturation bombing and shelling the Quemoy and Matsu Islands in the Strait on August 23, 1959. Nationalist Chinese F-86's were actively engaging Red Chinese MIG-17's at the time, while we had their backs. Two Marine officers and 5 Marine techs jerry rigged a couple dozen Nationalist F-86's to carry Sidewinder heat seeking missiles. At this point, Red China had no idea air to air missiles even existed.
When the Nationalist F-86's began picking off the Red Chinese MIG's at will from a safe distance, things wound down in a hurry.
