Our chip-sealed roads had signs "Road closed to sharp-shod animals and vehicles with lugs on wheels." A throw-back to the 40's. Sure wish I could have got one of those signs when they were all taken down.
I'm 62 (today!), and the state roads were all paved when I was a kid, but the county roads were gravel. I used to ride with the road grader guy when I was little. No gravel county roads around here anymore- all chip sealed.
