My Wandering Mind

Had to take a little 200 mile road trip yesterday with a loaded trailer and my old pee-brain got to thinking back when I was a boy.

Anyone else remember back when the state roads were still gravel? Ga-Yee-Sus, think I'm gettin' old! :>)

And one in our town, run by a good looking single gal, had a sign, "Free Coffee To Truck Drivers".

I suspect the cafe wasn't her only occupation.

Remember when "Reasonable and Proper" was the speed limit on those secondary roads? About 1955 they started posting limits which were 65 in the country, even on the gravel!

Allan I am 67 and figuring that is older than you but don,t know. Did you ever get all the weed wheat cut.. Sure could use about 400 bu.
None in the bin anywhere around here. Shelled around the edges of the corn field yesterday to start opening up the fields. Still checked about 19/20 but is drying down fast. Looks like a decent corn crop considering it was under water for 80 hrs early on in the flood.. Soon as we finish corn planing on headind back out your way.
Maybe up abour 4 corners, some guy ross Byner on here wants me to come by.. Jerry

Good memories Vern. I remember Dad looking at his watch and saying, "There goes the City of New Orleans". Tracks were about 3/4 mile away through the woods, and those whistles sounded good coming up the holler.

And you could hear the boards on the wooden decked bridge rumble when a car crossed it. Which was pretty seldom back then. Not much traffic after dark in Boskeydell, Illinois.

And the oil & chip roads had signs that said, "Vehicles With Lugs Prohibited".

Gotta love those old clunkity-clunk bridges.
Anyone remember advertisements painted on the roof or sides of barns?

"Car in ditch, Man in tree. Moon was full, and so was he." Mom didn"t like it when they put up..."Cattle crossing means go slow, that old bull is some cows" beau." Way too racy! BS gave us the old signs- nice wood for grain box endgates.

Our chip-sealed roads had signs "Road closed to sharp-shod animals and vehicles with lugs on wheels." A throw-back to the 40's. Sure wish I could have got one of those signs when they were all taken down.

I'm 62 (today!), and the state roads were all paved when I was a kid, but the county roads were gravel. I used to ride with the road grader guy when I was little. No gravel county roads around here anymore- all chip sealed.

I remember all them things, even some State Highways now that were just country roads then. I will be 69 late Nov.
