gas tank and fuel system cleaning

I am presently working on several tractors, cleaning up and fixing up. J.D., Allis, Farmall, Massey: Please give me some tips on cleaning gas tanks. Seems I drain tanks, replace strainers, rebuild carbs, and imideatly replug the system with more crud that seems to grow in the tank.
