I have a ? for dean. If the tank has sat for a long while and has rust flaked in the inside of the tank, then what do you sugest? I dont believe for two secs. that an abrasive meterial will hurt a thing. I have several old piecies of equipment i have used gravel to clean the tanks with and I keep them full at all times ( unless running ) I say use the gravel and keep the tank toped off... how else do you clean the inside of a tank that might have sat for years building up moisture and rusty scale.
