That cannery is in my town. I worked there up to a month ago. I saw the end coming and jumped ship before it sank out from under me.
It's not just the last cannery in Maine, it's also the last sardine cannery in the United States, period.
"Not enough fish" is just the excuse they used. We were doomed from the time we were acquired. They only bought us because we came as part of the deal with a HUGE cannery in New Brunswick, Canada. The only reason we were open as long as we were is because it was required by the Department of Justice Consent Decree required for the international sale.
The NB outfit packs more fish in a day than we could in a week, and the Canadians aren't shackled by a catch limit.
