OT -Question Battery in Stove/Oven Exploded

Have a question for anyone as to the real hazards of having a D size fashlight battery explode in the son"s/daughter in-law"s kitchen oven. It seems that the 1 1/2 year old grandson had thrown a battery in the oven -hiding toys or parts of toys. Just getting into the T-Twos. Anyway, the son made supper last night and didn"t notice the battery -it exploded in the oven. I"m not sure of the extent of the mess or what they were cooking, but now the daughter in-law is freaking out -worrying about all the toxins splattered in the oven and wants to buy a new stove. I told her to just give a real good cleaning and not to worry. She"s worried about any of the powder/dust thrown out of the battery getting on any future meals. They can"t really afford a new stove. How hazardous is this situation?
What"s your opinions? Thanks

Probably a good cleaning, and she's good to go. I am a chemist, but you can take this advice as worth as much as you paid for it. Betcha it made a pretty good BOOM!

Well now I know for sure that those warnings on batteries are not made in jest. Sorry to learn of the mess.

Since the battery is probably an alkali battery I wouldn't be too concerned. I'm willing to bet if they called the battery company they would be reassured that there are no real issues involved with contents within the battery. Sure what I would do if I had worry.

That's is one that a good cleaning may make it safe or it may not. I know no help. Now if you maybe cal the phone number that is on a good many battery's you buy the company might be able to tell you how to clean it up. I know if they still make battery's like they did when I was a kid you have lead, zinc, and acid to worry about and the lead is a big time problem. Next is it gas or electric?? If gas you maybe able to pull it out and pressure wash if and be safe if electric maybe maybe not

Stop the hysteria.

The oven will be fine with a thorough cleaning. Probably without.

As I said then call the battery company they will at least be able to tell you if it can be cleaned up and maybe how. Shoot maybe you will get lucky and they will buy them a new one you never know funnier things have happened and I have seen some odd one over the years

Theres no lead in flashlite batteries.A good cleaning will fix the oven.Oven cleaners are far more caustic than anything in a flashlite battery. The clean air turkeys are causing much trouble in this country.

Well ok years ago there was lead or was that zinc that was around the out side of the battery. Been to many decades since I would ope up a battery and do things with the parts that probably should not have been done. But hey it was fun but bet some times the cops did not think so because of U.F.O, reports. Some how hydrochloric acid and that stuff mixed in a soda bottle made hydrogen and then in balloon and a few trick made for neat flashes in the shy

Since it was probalby an alkyline battery and that is a base you need an acid to neutralize the residue. Vineger would be my acid of choice in this case.

Just clean it good with detergent. If they were so toxic, they wouldn't put them in the landfill. I've seen 40 yard containers full of batteries sent to the dump. They run a bull dozer over them to destroy them and the tractor driver sometimes complains of them catching on fire LOL. That's the 6 volt lantern batteries that do that LOL.

#1 Suppress desire to attempt shaking some sense into daughter-in-law.
#2 There is less caustic in an alkaline battery than a few squirts of oven cleaner. No body freaks about eating food from a clean oven.
#3 Does your daughter-in-law have any practical knowledge or education? Any high school grad should know all this.

Now there's a idea can use to get rid of that mouse living in my stove. The cats sit and look at it all evening. I did put a mouse trap on a wire and lowered it down behind the stove. Got one last night, but the cats are still watching. I will try the trap again tonight. Then the battery. If the cats were around and had a battery go off, I'll bet they never go near the stove again. Stan

Hmmm. My son makes paper airplanes and sends them up on bottle rockets, so I better make sure he doesn't get wind of the pyrotechnic possibilites lurking in our flashlights....

one of those funny thins happen to me. tall kid was pulling me on another tractor he went over top of septic tank and broke the top.
well because of zoning and no one knowing anything about septic system insurance company paid for all but $ 250.
i got a new tank and drain field.

of course if you want an oven for powder coating, ring gear installation, heating cast, making organ pipes, etc...take it off her hands as it's already been initiated into the non food world

I don't need no help them coons done learned that is I see them Is shoots them and even if I misses them they get a lead bust in there steps Sort of like hem coyotes the other day Ya I'm holding back on you on this one till now. Saw a couple coyotes in the field mind you out at 300 plus yards. Well I do not have a long shoot gun with scope so I pulled out my 7.62X54 and took a couple of pop shoots at them and one I most have got close to because he would run one way then the other as I shoot at him Sort of like shooting the ducks are the fair steal your qts thigs

Small kids can't be left alone for a second. Isn't playing in the kitchen one of the most dangerous situations? Should be able to clean the stove. Dave

A woman dropped a cfl lamp on her rug,it broke. She called an enviro nazi outfit. They told her it would cost 2300 bucks to clean up.The last sardine cannery in ME is closing.130 people out of work.Gov and congress women made an appearence.Owners say they cant get enough fish to keep going due to Federal fishing regulations.

That cannery is in my town. I worked there up to a month ago. I saw the end coming and jumped ship before it sank out from under me.

It's not just the last cannery in Maine, it's also the last sardine cannery in the United States, period.

"Not enough fish" is just the excuse they used. We were doomed from the time we were acquired. They only bought us because we came as part of the deal with a HUGE cannery in New Brunswick, Canada. The only reason we were open as long as we were is because it was required by the Department of Justice Consent Decree required for the international sale.

The NB outfit packs more fish in a day than we could in a week, and the Canadians aren't shackled by a catch limit.

Thanks real much to the tree-hugging commies at National Marine Fisheries.

Ive talked with a woman who worked in the canneries years ago.She said that when you couldnt put the sardine waste back in the sea the ground fish disappeared.Russians ships were in penobscot bay catching pogies. My father in law used sardine waste to fertilze hay back in the 30s.I understand Ill have to register to fish salt water once a year.I used to get a few mackeral.Ive traded saw sharpening for mackeral over the years.Fixed tvs for firewood when customers were broke. What the hell has happened the old Maine ways.
