I grew up in one of the little hill towns in New England in the 50's- 60's and sometimes when the school bus could not make the hills on a snowy day the driver would get all the kids to sit in the rear of the bus for the added weight over the rear wheels. It usually worked too. All the kids used to like to sit at the back because the frost heaves in the road were bad enough to cause the kids to come right up out of their seats.
