The plated stuff has never struck me as being the best chain out there in terms of life, but I doubt that will ever matter for the use you put on them. For the price you paid it's hard to argue. Duo-Tracs should work well for you.
Likewise, I don't think you need all the bungee's on there except mabey one to take the slack out at the joint... New chains like that, well fitted should stay on quite well. The only problem I ever had with them was the half hooks on the loose cross chains would come loose. I used to wire them in place and not use any bungee cords.
