My tractor allows turning off the assist anytime it is not needed---AND it is supposed to be turned off when on pavement. Don't know if yours is like that or not.
It was told to me years ago, and may very well be in error, that with any 4 wheel drive the fronts turn a tiny fraction faster than the rears so as to help maintain straight travel. On pavement the slightly faster rotation scuffs off the tire as it slips attempt to pull the tractor forward at a faster rate than the rear.
Personally I didn't buy the theory but just presenting it.
