I don't think your buddy should have even paid the $4500. That price was probably ran up to. In cases like that, a good auctioneer will put it back on the block, sometimes only allowing the original legitimate bidders to bid. It is common if there is confusion to who has the winning bid or if someone tries to weasel out. I had a crawler loader in an auction but I could have a reserve bid on it. The auctioneer took care of it and I didn't have to do anything. I didn't get the reserve and since it was at the auctioneers site, I didn't even have pay anything cause it didn't sell. I had it at one of his farm auctions and did pay a little when it didn't sell but he suggested I take it to his big auction in his yard. He also had copies of all the receipts I had, so didn't think my reserve was out of line. I'd be reporting that auctioneer if I was your buddy. He might have got it for $3000.
