Well........they only worked to a point. Champion and others I'm sure made "spark gap" plugs, and do you remember the infamous Delco V8 rotors that came in "long" and "short" rotor contacts?
I believe with most any modern electronic ignition---which generates much more pulse power--this gap would only cause problems. The main reason it worked was that it allowed pulse voltage to climb and develop more power than at a lower firing voltage.
