Probably for the same reason Gasoline used to look like orange Kool-Aid and now it looks like pi$$. Additives, is what I mean to say. On the flip side, unless someone thinks oil changes are a waste of time and money, you don't see the 1" layer of muck in the bottom of the pan at 100,000 miles nor do you need a valve job at 75-80,000 either.
