rusty gas tank

What is the best method for dealig with a rusty gas tank? I bought a 1940 h that sat for about 8 years. I got it to run, but the gas tank is rusty, therefore contaninating the gasoline, causing it not to run smooth. If I let gasoline in the tank for a couple of days, the gas is discolored and smells bad. Any ideas?
