Well the wires on the amp gauge are probably correct as they are! If it is 6 volt, the chances are it is positive ground. Hook the battery up positive ground. Now turn on the lights to see if the amp gauge goes toward discharge (about 8 to 10 amps if the lights work) Next polarize the generator. (do not start it) use a jumper and ground the F terminal of the generator to shiny metal, then use a stout wire, and jump between the Bat terminal on the reg to the Arm terminal on the reg. This will spark. Be ready to pull off a battery cable if the points stick. (by the way reversing the wires should make no difference in anything but which way the needle moves, unless you ar not moving all the wires) There should be only one wire going to the starter switch from the amp meter, no other wires on that terminal.
