Carla, From here, we can't tell whether or not "you did anything wrong" to cause the problem. Although it is true, engines all wear out after time, I can tell you 3 things that will cause an early demise of any engine, whether it be a tractor, automobile or lawnmower. 1) Running with no air cleaner or not servicing air cleaner properly. This will kill an engine quicker than anything. 2) Not changing motor oil at the recommended intervals or using improper oil. 3) Not maintaining the cooling system causing the engine to overheat. The radiator needs to be clean inside (and outside) on a liquid cooled engine and there must be nothing to restrict the air flow on an air cooled engine.
