PAINT SOURCES

Posted by Ken McWilliams on September 27, 2000 at 04:31:52 from (38.232.245.127):

A few years ago I painted some equipment using the paint from Tractor Supply Co. (TSC).
Now, after 2 - 3 years, the reds that were used (IHC red & MF red)are pink, and the yellow (JD yellow) is cream colored. A car hauling trailer was painted 2 years ago using IHC red that has already faded to a dark pink and is peeling on the wood surfaces. At least the white wheels didn't fade - but what color could it fade to? I haven't seen much evidence of "chalkiness". The paint film seems to have good integrity, it's the lousy pigment that's used in the paint.

It's a disappointing thing to go through the labor to fix your equipment only to have the smeared grease at the pivot joints outlast the paint.

The keeper tractors that I've painted have had catalyzed automotive paint which is very durable, and with which I'm very pleased. The automotive paint, however, is very pricy after the cost of the paint, catalyst, reducer, etc.

I just recently painted a CASE tractor using the CASE-IH paint from the CASE-IH dealer. At this time I don't know how it's going to last, but it sure is glossy and sprayed very well - But it cost me $32/ gallon.

I'm planning to paint a Massey Ferguson in about 2 months after rebuilding the engine and giving it a good mechanical going over. I plan to use the MF red and MF grey colors.

My question is this. Is the MF paint from the MF dealer a good quality paint? Would you suggest using it? Other than going the automotive route and getting it color matched which I know will be a good quality paint, what do you suggest as being the best alternative to the mega buck automotive paint?

I painted a 24' gooseneck trailer with all diamond plate bed that I built earlier this year, and a horse trailer this year. I used IHC red from RustOleum. It went on very well, it is very bright and glossy, but it's only had 3 - 4 months of aging, and is too early to tell. Also, the RustOleum isn't available in MF red or grey.

I'm going to stay away from the paints from TSC (manufactured by BPS- Best Paint ....) and Quality Farm & Fleet, mostly due to the poor weathering/fading characteristics. I want this tractor to look good for more than a year.

I know that many of you are using the TSC and Quality Farm and Fleet paints on you antique tractors, and I've read your positive comments. I'd bet you're storing them inside when not in use, also. All of the TSC and QF&F paints that I have used have looked very nice after painting and I was very pleased. The satisfaction, however, was short lived after seeing how they age in just a couple of years in the sun.

Opinions, please.
