I have been given a Sears GT 5000 with a bad engine. The pistons arn't functioning. No compression, etc. My local mechanic says to trash the engine and find another. If the pistons aren't moving possibly the crank or rods are broken. Are there parts available? A new engine is well over $1K. Can another less expensive engine such as a briggs & Stratton be substitued? Has anyone evey put a small HP engine in? If so , how did it work? Any help is appreciated.
I have been advised not to try to rebuild the engine becuase of the expensive parts and lack of local support. I am told there is no Kohler dealer in Western WA.
