WHY DON'T OLD WATER TEMP GAUGES EVER WORK?????

Why is it that very seldom do you find an old water temperature gauge that is in working condition? Oil pressure gauges work, so do ammeters, but it seems that water temp gauges just don't stand up over time. I understand how and why they work (air expansion in the sensor/ tube/coil inside, etc.) and I just can't figure out why they pack it in. Secondly, is there any way they can be repaired?
