Lance You sure you got all of your leaks stopped up? When you first started it, was I seeing a flaming backfire at the carb, or was it smoke? Intake valves stuck open will allow flaming backfires when accelerating and create that popping sound in the carb. Stuck exhaust valves will pop or back fire through the muffler. Was there any coolant left in the engine? Coolant will cause white smoke and taste (or smell) sweet, so if you have a stuck valve you can't free up you're still gonna have to take the head off. You can check and change the gasket then.
