C makes wierd noise

someone said this could be a sticking valve. I dont know. Im learning.

Any ideas?? It aint water in the gas, we know that. If you put your hand over the carb it will stop. Im clueless, im not even gonna guess. It now smokes some too which is no good. Head gasket mabey??

Lanse Sounds to me like its firing back through an intake valve. either sticking or maybe a chunk of carbon under it. I would take the valve cover off and see if you can find out anything. One of the valves should be really loose. Luck Bernie Steffen
 
Intake valve to tight, pull the plug wires off one at a time until it stops popping through the carb, that will be the cylinder you want to check the valves on.
 
i agree with the sticky valves too. how long did the tractor sit without running? what happens often, the valve that is open, whether intake or exhaust and get rust forming on the exposed stem. when the valve is operated, it gets up in the guide and binds the valve causing it to stick. sometimes you can free them up by pulling the valve cover and soaking up the valve stem with penetrating oil to free it. you can also squirt some kerosene on it or marvel mystery oil. the rust is abrasive and will wear the guide. wouldnt hurt to toss a pint of marvel oil in the crankcase and some in the fuel tank. itsapretty good upper cylinder libricant. worst case marvel oil wont hurt anything.
 
3-4 years, then overnight.

I think i remember hearing about just putting them under load to loosten a valve somewhere.
 
Bet you didn't do a ATF treatment to it before you started it up right??? If you didn't then very likely you have a stuck valve. You should pull the valve cover and look at it before you run it more or you can bend push rods and do some other funny things.

before you tear the engine apart, i would suggest doing a compression test. look for a cylinder that is producing a lower pressure than the others. all that you have to remove to do this is are the spark plugs. from there, you should be able to narrow it down to one cylinder that is causing the noise.

a compression tester can be found at almost any auto parts store. if they do not have one, they should be able to order one in for you. i would suggest a napa or car quest store.

Compression test is a good idea. Get the screw in compression tester. Pull all the plugs, open the throttle wide and turn it over 4-5 times to get a reading...repeat on the others. If you have a low compression on one or more cylinders, do a wet test. A wet test is taking a table spoon full of motor oil, pour it into the cylinder to be tested and retest, if the compression comes up, it's rings, if it doesn't it's valves. What happens is that the oil momentarily seals the rings and it raises the compression.
The sweet smell white smoke is your antifreeze getting into the combustion area...cylinders, only way for it to get there is a blown head gasket or a cracked head.
Now, back to the compression test...I typed it but....you don't have a starter motor and you need it to do the test. The engine has to spin over a bunch of times and the hand crank just isn't going to do it.
 
One more....white smoke, water, blue/gray smoke, oil and black smoke gas.
 
Lanse, pull 1 spark wire at the time, and find out which cylinder it is making the noise on. Then take off the rocker cover, and start motor, to see which valve is stuck. Bet it is a exhaust vale, causing compression to come through the carb. Jack
 
yeah i'd almost bet its a headgasket gone. not gonna say for sure cuz ive been wrong before but thats my bet. as for the noise, does sound like s tuck valve which mite cause that miss but im not gonna say for sure. thats what i think anyway. ive been following your posts for a while and think your doing a good job on your tractors for your age!

Gonna have to go with the stuck valve.

you can see the vapors shooting back out the carb as it pops.

So far I have only seen you add water as you were saying you didn't want to waste the money because you knowingly had leaks. At the same time I don't understand the "sweet smell" from the exhaust.

as you take the plugs out water should show on plug ,but seems to run fairly smooth not like a true missfire.

If you think it may be a piece of carbon stuck in the valve seat, give it a drink of water.

I've done this by warming engine to operating temp. speed up engine to working RPM and spray water with a spray bottle directly into carb.

Not so much as to stall the engine let it pick up speed and spray again and repeat till you use about a cup of water the steam it makes should soften the carbon and flush it out.

As you do this engine should smooth out.

You will see a lot of white smoke as you do this, but its only steam.
 
My bet is with a switched spark plug wire. If you've had them off since Rich was there, better check them again.
 
You have a lot of good ideas. Here's what I would do. Pull all the plugs, put your finger over the plug hole and crank it over slow, you may need some help. You should find one hole with less compression than all the rest. Bring the one with the lower compresson to tdc, and look in the plug hole with a light, you may see a valve hanging open, If so remove the valve cover, and tap the valve with a hammer (lightly).You also may need to disconnect the rocker. Make sure the top end is oiling. Stan
 
Like the others said,stuck intake valve.That will probably make it smoke too.Take the valve cover off and look for a broken valve spring or a valve stuck open.Do a compression check first so you know where to look.Maybe remover wires one at a time to see if that shows you where its at first,then check compression on that cylinder,then if its low see if the valve is stuck,broken spring,whatever.
 
Marvel Mystery OIl.Hey if you dont have a compression guage any motor with half decent compression should always blow your thumb off the hole when pushed down hard.I really like your movies.Best entertainment on ytmag.
 
That is put ATF in the cylinder of an engine that has sat a long time. ATF frees up sticking rings, cleans rust out and also frees up sticking valves. It is just a cheap way to help and engine start easier and also free up things and lube them up before you spin one over that has sat a long time

You sure you got all of your leaks stopped up? When you first started it, was I seeing a flaming backfire at the carb, or was it smoke?
Intake valves stuck open will allow flaming backfires when accelerating and create that popping sound in the carb. Stuck exhaust valves will pop or back fire through the muffler. Was there any coolant left in the engine? Coolant will cause white smoke and taste (or smell) sweet, so if you have a stuck valve you can't free up you're still gonna have to take the head off. You can check and change the gasket then.
