A 1N5404 is nothing more or less than a common ordinary 3A rated silicon rectifier diode, 400V PIV.
If you guys are talking about the excitation lead for GM alternators this should work fine.
Really all you need to know about diodes is the PIV which for 12 (14) V systems needs to be no larger than about the lowest you can buy commonly, say 50V. You need to know the rated amaperage --in this case 3A---and how much you are trying to draw through it, and---
whether the VOLTAGE DROP through the diode will affect the circuit you are using, which is nominally about .7V but this can change with heavy current draw.
