IN 5404 Diodes for 12 volt conversion

I acquired a bunch of diodes for a very reasonable price (take em), the number on them is IN 5404 with the letters FM under the numbers, my question is: Would they work for the 12 volt conversion using the diode method?

If you're talking about putting a diode in the circuit to prevent electrical feed back which in turn keeps the tractor running after the ignition switch is turned off. You can accomplish the same thing with an idiot light in that same circuit instead of the diode.

They will indeed work fine, I prefer, however, at least some degree of safety current limiting, which is why I recommend instead of the diode (or even with a diode for that matter) the use of a 10 to say 50 ohm resistor or an idiot light instead. It will prevent run on same as a diode but the resistor or idiot light is also a current limiter. Your tractor your choice.

A 1N5404 is nothing more or less than a common ordinary 3A rated silicon rectifier diode, 400V PIV.

If you guys are talking about the excitation lead for GM alternators this should work fine.

Really all you need to know about diodes is the PIV which for 12 (14) V systems needs to be no larger than about the lowest you can buy commonly, say 50V. You need to know the rated amaperage --in this case 3A---and how much you are trying to draw through it, and---

whether the VOLTAGE DROP through the diode will affect the circuit you are using, which is nominally about .7V but this can change with heavy current draw.
