Back in the late 90s Corning Inc. was investing millions in new plants and tecnologies developing fiber optics for communications. They couldn't build or hire fast enough. Then suddenly it all crashed. Plants were mothballed and people laid off. I talked with a retired engineer from Corning Inc about what happened. He stated that cell tecnologies were taking over the communications industry so fast the fiber optics was nearly obsolete right out of the gate. Verizon high speed internet is not available in my area. I talked to a repair guy about this and he told me it will never happen. We're still on copper lines and high speed internet flows on fiber optics. Verizon sure as heck isn't going to spend their money on fiber optics out here when it will likely be replaced by cellular in a few years.
