There was a post on tool talk about 1 800 numbers. Question is this everyone has a cell now and many have axed there home phone (land line) Is there a directory for cell numbers like the old phone book? It is comming when the land line will be obsolete. Around here unless you have the guys number it is hard to get hold of them. Also these satalite phones that have computer phone tv all in one is getting popular in place of land line in the home. (don't ask me how it works) but no number in the book. Not to mention people change numbers/plans like they do cloaths. your thoughts?

Jocco I don"t think there is any directory for cell phones. It"s a real problem too. I will personally never give up my land line so it"s not a problem for me. I don"t think land lines are going to be obsolete any time soon as unreliable as cell phone service is. Can you imagine the chaos that an all cell phone world would be? Mr president we need you to order a missle strike. Oh, the damn cell phone won"t work! I don"t think land lines will become obsolete but the people that don"t have one are sometimes!

Oh man, I'm trying to rack my brain about what I heard on the news a couple of years ago pertaining to this, but I can't get it straight.

Basically, the FCC or whoever, had outlawed cellphone directories so that everyone and their dog, including telemarketers couldn't use up people's cell time by calling their cell phones. Then the law was lifted or was going to be lifted but Verizon, for one said they would never give out a directory, to protect their customers.

I'm sure someone else on this forum can fill in the gaps. Jim

If it is to your advantage to be "found" (ie, you have a business, etc.), then you'll keep a land line with directory. If you don't particularly care, or want to eliminate junk calls, or are actively trying to hide, then cell is the deal for you. I have three kids: one has always had both, one has always had only cell, the the third had cell only for awhile, then added a landline, then just last week cancelled the landline and went back to cell only, because the landline was seldom used. None of them are trying to hide; the one with both needs to be accessible, the others don't care- they went to cell only for financial reasons.

People that are not supposed to have cell numbers are getting them someway that they should not be. And I have both cell and land and see no way to get by without the land line. My cell at times setting at the kitchen table has no service and 5 seconds later service and then again 5 seconds later no service. Also my internet is on the land line.

The reason there is no directory for cell phones is because you are charged by the minute for calls in both directions. Do you want to pay for any and everybody calling you for no reason. I hope there is never a directory. Like sombody said if you want your phone open to the world, get a landline. Otherwise I don't want to pay to talk to somebody that I don't want to talk to.

Back in the late 90s Corning Inc. was investing millions in new plants and tecnologies developing fiber optics for communications. They couldn't build or hire fast enough. Then suddenly it all crashed. Plants were mothballed and people laid off. I talked with a retired engineer from Corning Inc about what happened. He stated that cell tecnologies were taking over the communications industry so fast the fiber optics was nearly obsolete right out of the gate.
Verizon high speed internet is not available in my area. I talked to a repair guy about this and he told me it will never happen. We're still on copper lines and high speed internet flows on fiber optics. Verizon sure as heck isn't going to spend their money on fiber optics out here when it will likely be replaced by cellular in a few years.

Part of that is true. The biggest issue was that in the late 90's every one was putting in fiber. Thinking they would sell/rent the band width. Fiber rings were going in every where.
Then they found a way to get more band width out of existing fibers. More than double.
That put a big anchor on all the new fiber rings. All kinds of unused fiber in the ground.
Plus all the telcompanies thought they would make a killing on long distance.
HA! That worked well.

I suspect some day you will get free land line with a High Speed internet contract/ Cell deal/tv deal.
Any way thats what I would do if I ran it. Tele switches are useless if no one uses them.

After Katrina the only communications that worked around here were the land lines (underground cabels in my area). Cells didn't because of all the downed towers. Text messeges via cell worked however.
