Can I live without live PTO?

Can someone explain what type of tractor jobs need live PTO? My understanding is with live PTO I can keep the PTO going when transmission clutch is pushed in. Non-live only allows PTO to run when in gear or in neutral. Is this correct? I am shopping for a tractor and intend on using for bush hogging my field, road work with bucket and grader blade, possibly some minor logging, moving some snow banks, and occassionally helping my neighbor hay his fields. Thanks for any words of wisdom.
