Electrical problem

I removed the generator from a TO35 and put in a GM alternator.When I jump start it,the tractor runs.When I disconnect the jumper cables,the engine quits.What's the problem?I don't think it's the battery.I'm sure it's something simple and obvious I'm missing.Can anyone help?Thanks.
