Check to see if you have any voltage at the ignition switch and coil. Where did you connect the jumper cables? Maybe when you removed the voltage regulator you got some wires confused. Some VR's had terminals that were nothing more than junction blocks for the hot wire on its way to the key. Even a mostly discharged battery should keep an engine running for a while.
