MalwareBytes, AVG Free Edition and Spybot Search and Destroy are all I use. Never had a problem.
You might also think about using the Windows Task Scheduler. Set them up to run when the pc is on but you aren't using it. Mine run after midnight.
With the MalwareBytes, I don't think you can set it to update or remove malware/spyware infections automatically. I run the update manually while I'm online anyway; doesn't take long, and I'm on dial-up. Then let it scan later. Only have to click 2 buttons to remove what it finds.
Spybot can be set to update and remove infections automatically. After installing, click the Mode button, change to Advanced. Click Settings, click Settings again, scroll down to the Web Update section and select your desired options. Then click Scheduler to select options for fixing problems and closing the program automatically.
