I have the Norton Internet Security 2008 and the problem I’m having with this software is when ever I go on line it starts running live updates. In the mean time while it’s running the updates my PC slows down (considerably) at times it even freezes up. I have turned off the live updates and it still runs live updates. Seems to run a lot of updates all the time. My last Norton protection before the 2008 it would alert me first that I had updates to download. I have high-speed Internet running Window’s XP. Is there better antivirous software to buy that doesn’t slow your computer down? I’m sure open for suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike

i use symantec endpoint protection, it's the corprate version of norton(well symantec owns norton), the great thing about it you don't have to pay a fee every month or year like some anti-viruses. i never have a problem with it slowing my computer down. if anti-virus programs are slowing you computer down a lot i would shuggesst buying some more ramm (at least 1 gig) and having windows reinstalled.

if all your doing is surffing the internet at e-mail, you could try avg free, you can download it from there website, (note it is not he greatest and has a lot of weak points).

Mike,
My younger brother is a PC wizard and has his own computer business. Our PC got infected and he put these programs on our PC and it works fine now. We have to scan a few times a week just to keep up with things.
here"s what he gave us to use;

malwarebytes anti malware
AVG anti-virus

I don"t know if they have websites because i never looked into them but i would suspect they do.

Good Luck

If you go to: download.com/windows, you will be on cnet, lots of downloads and reviews, click on: Security Software on the left side, it will take you to the download page you want. I believe it is a website you can trust, never caused me any trouble.

Most of us that used to use Norton have now dumped it. Tries to take over the whole computer. Suggest you remove it, find some thing else. AVG free.

MalwareBytes, AVG Free Edition and Spybot Search and Destroy are all I use. Never had a problem.

You might also think about using the Windows Task Scheduler. Set them up to run when the pc is on but you aren't using it. Mine run after midnight.

With the MalwareBytes, I don't think you can set it to update or remove malware/spyware infections automatically. I run the update manually while I'm online anyway; doesn't take long, and I'm on dial-up. Then let it scan later. Only have to click 2 buttons to remove what it finds.

Spybot can be set to update and remove infections automatically. After installing, click the Mode button, change to Advanced. Click Settings, click Settings again, scroll down to the Web Update section and select your desired options. Then click Scheduler to select options for fixing problems and closing the program automatically.

MalwareBytes - www.malwarebytes.org

Spybot - www.safer-networking.org

AVG - free.avg.com

Hope this helps.

Secure it is about $6.00 per month. If you have issues they will (remote control) run your computer, and clean it up---excelent service to say the least. Problem is they slip past once in a while, and they have to clean it up. It takes probably four hrs if not more.

It also runs in the background and does slow things down a bit.

I like to thank all for your input! I know my Norton is about to run out within a few weeks.
Looks like most of you use are using the AVG Anti-virus.
I know my computer needs a good cleaning! Lately
it seems like I'm back on dial up. We will check this out and thanks again for your help on this matter.

I have Norton Antivirus 2009 on my computers. It is faster than the other versions and doesn't slow my computer down. It only does live update automatically if I my computer has been offline for several days. I never have liked Norton Internet Security because I have my computers networked and it causes trouble. Norton 360 is the worst software I have seen.

When my Norton expired I also downloaded AVG and have been a lot happier, although I do have to manually update it each week or so it only takes two minutes. You say that your computer needs a good cleaning, mine did too and I downloaded "CCLEANER" from the cnet website, just create a "system restore" check point first under accessories, system tools. On the cnet download website type "CCLEANER" in the search box at the top of the page and click on the magnifying glass symbol to the right of it. Download the program, read all the instructions and preview what it wants to remove, you will be amazed at all the junk on your disc that is slowing you down. I let it do it"s thing and my computer is a lot faster now. It has it"s own system restore program that it will encourage you to use before cleaning in case you don"t like the results you can restore it back. I don"t mean to sound like a salesman, it has worked for me and it is free.

I've never had any luck with Norton either. It also causes problems when you want to load a new program. I bought this Panda cheap and haven't tried it yet. Maybe should try this free AVG.

I used AVG free edition for several years, until I switched to Vista and a new computer. When the free product that came with it expired I switched to a paid version of AVG in order to also get a firewall. I had formerly used Zone Alarm firewall but it wasn"t yet ready for Vista.

Everything worked great until this past July when an update from AVG carried some flaw that rendered the program useless. I couldn"t even access the control panel.

Since it was a paid version I sought out AVG support. Auto response received--telling me to do all of the things I had already done. Sent several more emails to the company and to their U.S. reps and never did get more than an automated response.

AFTER SIX WEEKS of not having an anti-virus running and being extremely careful of what sites I visited and what emails I opened I finally said to heck with AVG and switched to AVAST.

When I uninstalled the useless AVG I received an automated response asking me why I was no longer using their product? Talk about frustration! They only seem to care IF you use their product, not IF it works.

AVG was the best I have used to date, but if it won"t work there is no reason to continue having it. Lack of product support soured me on paid AVG and of course that carries over to their free ware also in my opinion. I still have no idea why one cannot telephone AVG for paid version help and instead must rely on useless auto responses.

Bummer as I think it excellent EXCEPT when it doesn"t work at all. Anyone like the remaining few months of paid AVG that I still have and no longer use?

Comodo is suppose to be good too. Free. I downloaded it, but it didn't find any more than what AVG already had, so I deleted.

With all the updates coming in with antivirus software, you must have Broadband these days to start with. I had three of the norton packages and with their best, I had an attack on my system that was unrepairable. AVG free is what I'm running now, works fine!

comodo is a really good firewall malware preventer if you know what you are doing.
the antivirus part is not up there yet but it should be in a few months or so.
just install without a/v and get avast free or avg free and run it with it and all should be fine.

Mike,
If your Norton is about to run out, and you don't want to continue to use it, make sure it doesn't "auto renew". If you paid for it by credit card on the net, it will "auto renew" unless you "uncheck" it. Kind of sneaky and underhanded.

I use AVG free, CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Zone Alarm and SpywareBlaster. A computer guru friend helped me set it up. I have a folder on my desktop for easy access. Some update and run themselves, some I have to do, but it only takes a few minutes a week. I go anywhere and everywhere on my 4 year old, entry level, Dell and have not had any problems. I however did before I(we) put these things on.

had panda and it worked fine until it was time to renew. it wouldn't download properly and had to make a ton of calls to get it right. this happened two years in arow. i inally asked for my money back and switched to avg. then avg didn't worked because couldn't delete panda out of computor. finally had to totaly reload computor to get rid of panda. So far I'm pleased with AVG.

My antivirus protection hasn't been mentioned here, but it's Kaspersky anti-virus 7. It's great!
This was recommended to us by the best buy salesperson who sold us our computer, who was a gamer. He says he uses Kaspersky because it doesn't slow down his computer at all.
I've found the same. Also, it updates every hour, so you're always as protected as possible. It's really great.
It was originally from Russia, and was translated and brought over here. I really like it and recommend it to anyone looking for antivirus protection.

You can save yourself a lot of grief by opening up an email account like hotmail, yahoo, etc. They let you scan attachments with always updated ware, and give you the option to sort spam, etc. It's a PITA, but better than nothing. You can always forward it after checking to your normal email account.

Just a thought.

Chap on radio this morning said with windows update, to take it off the automatic and do it manually each week , as they release them on Tuesdays and they{chap on radio] have found problems in the ones released later in the week.
I use AGV free without problems, updated regularly.
