I've heard this whine since the 1950's. It's always the same: Unions are killing us. And it's most often jealousy talking. The EPA has put more costs into to a car than the UAW ever thought about. If you want to whine, there's your start. Have you noticed what steel costs or rubber products? Bought any tires lately? How would you like to pay GM's electric bill? Or real estate taxes? How much did all those buildings cost to build? And all that machinery in those buildings wasn't free either. R&D costs are high and always ongoing. Direct labor costs are a very small part of the costs of production. Yeah, the old "unions are killing us" song is getting pretty tired.
